Former Pleasant Home Eagle, and current Shelton State reliever Gabe Gunter has been selected to play for Kalamazoo Growlers in the Northwoods League summer baseball league.

 

The Northwoods League is one of the most prestigious collegiate summer baseball leagues in the country, and comprises of top college players from all over. The league is made up of 18 teams that play a 72-game season in the span of 76 days between late May and mid-August.

 

Teams in league come from the Upper Midwestern United States and Southern Canada. Minnesota has six teams, Wisconsin has eight teams, Michigan has two teams and one team each in Iowa and Ontario.

 

Since the leagues beginning 22 years ago, 120 players have advanced to Major League Baseball.

 

With the grueling schedule, the teams are run similar to a professional team, so that the players can get a feel for the game at a professional level.

 

Gunter will be joining one of the newer teams in the league, as the Growlers’ first game was played on May 30, 2014.

 

Gunter, who has signed to pitch at Marshall next season, has helped lead Shelton State into the Region 22 tournament this weekend in Ozark as the North Division’s top seed.

 

Working mainly has a relief pitcher; Gunter has appeared in 11 games this season for a total of 38 innings.

 

Over that stretch, Gunter has a microscopic ERA of 1.89 to go along with 28 strikeouts and just 11 walks.

 

Gunter has started four games this season for Shelton State including one complete-game win. Gunter has a 1-1 record on the season.

 

The Growlers will begin their season on May 26 when they play Madison Mallards.
