Thunderstorms are likely for the remainder of the week, Covington County EMA Director Susan Harris said Monday.

There is a 60 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms today, mainly after 1 p.m.; a 70 percent chance on Wednesday and Thursday; and a 60 percent chance on Friday, according to the National Weather Service out of Mobile.

Harris said throughout the week, residents can expect scattered showers along with the thunderstorms.

“Everybody needs to be aware of what’s going on,” she said. “They need to have their weather info handy.”

Harris said most of the rain will fall south of here, in Baldwin County and in Florida.

She said the coastal areas can expect 8-10 inches of rain.

A high level system, flowing from the southwest that will carry across the Gulf Coast today and tomorrow is causing the thunderstorms, according to NOAA.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist through tomorrow night.

A heavy downpour is slated for tonight, and widespread rainfall totals today and tomorrow will range from 1.25-2.5 inches.

Harris said even though the outlook for the rest of the week may be set in stone to the south of us, the weather can change.
