Church honoring law officers Sunday

Area law enforcement and fire department personnel are invited to attend “Good Shepherd Sunday” services at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
The day, which began in the 1990s, is a show of appreciation to those who have dedicated their lives to protecting others, said church outreach director Dr. Fred Winkler.
“They have such a dangerous job,” Winkler said. “If you think about it, they are good shepherds watching over us, the flock. We have set aside one Sunday a year to honor the police department, fire department and (Alabama Beverage Control Board) agents for what they do and give to our community.
“If you look at the monument on the square, it will tell you just what the price of that service costs those men and their families,” he said. “This is why we choose to honor them.”
The service will begin at 9:15 a.m. with police and fire department chaplain, the Rev. Leroy Cole, giving the sermon.
A luncheon will be held for the officers and firefighters, as well as their families, at the conclusion of the service.
