24-year-old faces 2 counts, is allegedly from Covington County

A man with Covington County ties is in custody after allegedly shooting two Georgia men on Tuesday night.

Alan Abney of Kinsey, Ala., 24, is facing two counts of murder after the incident at 48 Marion Street in Damascus, Ga.

Early County Sheriff’s Office Captain Will Caudill said the sheriff’s office received a 911 call shortly before 10 p.m. on Tuesday about gun shots and at least one victim who was hit and unconscious.

Caudill said Abney’s vehicle — a white Chevrolet pickup truck with Alabama license plates — was seen leaving the scene.

“A deputy responding came across the vehicle on Hwy. 200, going toward Blakely from Damascus,” Caudill said.

Caudill said the deputy conducted a traffic stop, and Abney was arrested without further incident.

Several surrounding law enforcement agencies responded to the scene at the Marion Street residence, where it was determined that two victims suffered from fatal gun shot wounds, Caudill said.

“At that point was when the investigative division was notified,” he said.

Caudill said his office conducted several interviews with witnesses and collected physical evidence to aid in the investigation.

As a result of the short, but ongoing investigation, Caudill said he is applying for warrants on Abney for two counts of murder, an additional count of aggravated assault on a victim inside a home where gunshots entered and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Caudill said the victim inside the home wasn’t injured.

“We’re still following up on leads,” Caudill said. “We have some information on what led up to this assault, but we’re still co-oberating information into the assault.”

Caudill said Abney’s vehicle was described as being from Andalusia as its registration indicated, but his drivers license had an Opp address.

According to his social media profile, he was a truck driver and went to Straughn High School.

During the time of the arrest, Abney was residing in Kinsey, a town in Houston County.

The victims were identified as Leland Gleaton, 22, and Terry Cox, 29, both of Damascus.
