Best-selling author Eric Metaxas wrote an opinion article recently published in the online edition of the Wall Street Journal. “Science Increasingly Makes the Case for God” generated thousands of comments – both agreeing and disagreeing.

It’s reportedly the most popular article ever published by the online Wall Street Journal with over 390,000 Facebook “likes” as of this week. Is there evidence that points to intelligent design?

Metaxas notes, “Today there are more than 200 known parameters necessary for a planet to support life—every single one of which must be perfectly met, or the whole thing falls apart. Without a massive planet like Jupiter nearby, whose gravity will draw away asteroids, a thousand times as many (asteroids) would hit Earth’s surface. The odds against life in the universe are simply astonishing.

“Yet here we are, not only existing, but talking about existing. What can account for it? Can every one of those many parameters have been perfect by accident? At what point is it fair to admit that science suggests that we cannot be the result of random forces? Doesn’t assuming that an intelligence created these perfect conditions require far less faith than believing that a life-sustaining Earth just happened to beat the inconceivable odds to come into being?”

Dr. Richard Swenson, author of the book, “More Than Meets the Eye – Fascinating Glimpses of God’s Power and Design,” describes Earth as the blue planet that “moves in orbit at 72,000 miles per hour in order to complete its annual circle around the sun. A change of distance from the sun by a mere two percent would void our planet of life.”

He goes on to say, “If our moon did not exist, neither would we. The earth would rotate three times faster, subjecting us to continuous gale force winds.” Swenson believes, “God has, in fact, left clear evidence of His creative role in all universal artistry.” He quotes astronomer Allan Sandage as saying, “We can’t understand the universe without the supernatural.”

Perhaps the writer of Psalms said it best, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1 NIV). An Old Testament prophet tells us, “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing” (Isaiah 40:26 NIV).

Last week a Facebook friend posted an anonymous quote that I shared on my Facebook page, “We live on a blue planet that circles around a ball of fire next to a moon that moves the seas, and you still don’t believe in miracles?”

Metaxas, author of the recently-published book, “Miracles, What They Are, Why They Happen, and How They Can Change Your Life,” writes, “In the end, belief in God, especially the biblical God, is an act of faith.
