A hostage situation involving two females was resolved without injuries Tuesday.

At approximately 5:45 Tuesday morning, deputies received a call about a domestic incident on Straughn School Road, Covington County Investigator Howard West said.

Two subjects in the house, the suspect’s mother and girlfriend, were allegedly being held in the house before deputies arrived.

The mother was able to slip out of the house and call for help, officials said.

West said upon arrival to the scene, Sgt. Jeff Daniel was confronted by a young woman who had exited the residence and claimed that her boyfriend, Shawn Burton, 23, had “made threats toward her in the bedroom, wouldn’t let her leave, and had a shotgun.”

“The mother was already out of the house and the girlfriend came out when we got there,” Daniel said. “He kind of pushed her out of the door.”

The young woman told Daniel that Burton had threatened to kill her.

Burton was still in the house and known to be in possession of several weapons.

“We tried for about an hour with the PA system to negotiate with him but got no response at all,” Daniel said.

“It was determined by the fact that there were several weapons in the house that the Sheriff should contact IRT,” Howard said. “The IRT team responded with negotiators and set up for negotiations.”

West said a phone was thrown into the house to negotiate with Burton, but he walked out shortly after; the phone was unused.

The IRT apprehended Burton, who is being held at the Covington County Jail on charges of unlawful imprisonment, a second degree, class-A misdemeanor, menacing domestic violence, possession of marijuana I and possession of drug paraphernalia.

West said they will continue with investigation, but Burton has been interviewed. All parties involved will be interviewed including those involved and a neighbor.

Drug Task Force Investigator Greg Jackson said marijuana was found in the home during the investigation.

No one was injured during the incident, and Howard said that there are certain characteristics of kidnapping and that this case does not classify as one.

“We are here for the safety of the community, and that was what our concern was,” Howard said.

Howard said he would like to thank the multiple agencies that responded to the scene including the IRT and IRT Commander Kevin Chance, Drug Task Force, Andalusia and Opp police departments, the Covington County Sheriff’s reserves and posse, Advanced Rescue, Pardon and Parole and the ABC Board.

“I would like to commend the IRT for excellent work Tuesday morning,” APD Chief Paul Hudson said. “They did what they were supposed to do, and no one was hurt. It’s good to know we have them available at a moment’s notice.”
