Lady Tigers win tourney
The Straughn Lady Tigers toppled the Brantley Lady Bulldogs 45-34 Wednesday afternoon, to clinch the eighth annual Straughn Girls Thanksgiving Tournament championship.
The Lady Tigers rocketed out to a 15-7 lead in the first period, thanks in part to big time three pointers from Kayelyn Kinsaul, Janelle Nurse and Jacie Williamson.
The Lady Tigers saw their lead slip to just two points at half time, 22-20. The Lady Bulldogs began settling in, and hitting shots in the second.
In the third period, the Lady Tigers turned it up a notch on both sides of the ball. The Lady Tigers’ defense held the Lady Bulldogs, to just 3 points in the third period.
The Lady Tigers continued their outstanding effort into the fourth quarter, and squashed any hopes the Lady Bulldogs may have had at upsetting the Lady Tigers.
Jacie Williamson led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 13 points. Kinsaul scored 11 points for the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Payton Burnett with 22 points.
“We beat a very good, and very well coached team, but we put them at the line to many times,” Lady Tigers’ head coach Scott Kinsaul said. “Derriuanna Gantt was a key to our game today. She had to come in when Paige Taylor got into foul trouble, and she played really well in her place.”
Emily Wood, Nurse, Kinsaul, Taylor and Williamson all earned All-Tournament team honors. Williamson was also named as the tournament’s MVP.
