Suspicious circumstances surrounding a mid-morning fire in Opp have prompted an investigation.
Both the Opp Police Department and the Opp Fire Department were dispatched at 9:50 a.m., when there was a report of a structure fire with injuries at a residence on the 300 Block of Batton Street.
According to Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald, when officers arrived at the scene they located a 39-year-old white female, who had suffered severe burns, and a 32-year-old white male who had moderate-to-severe burns.
Officers and firefighters found the pair in the front yard.
Opp Fire Chief Cory Spurlin said the pair was airlifted separately.
The pair was transported to Channell-Lee Stadium and flown to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, he said.
“We are working with the Opp Police Department and the state fire marshal’s office,” Spurlin said.
The case is still under investigation, and the identities of the victims have not been released by law enforcement.
The Star-News will update the story as more details become available.
