Red Level’s Johnathan Lee tabbed Player of Week

Johnathan Lee may be one of few words, but the Red Level sophomore running back let his actions speak for themselves last week during the Tigers’ 42-20 victory over Pleasant Home.

Lee rushed for 276 yards on 23 carries and scored five touchdowns to earn The Star-News Player of the Week honors. He was also a notable player on offense in this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association Player of the Week poll, which was released on Tuesday.

When asked if there was a moment during Red Level’s second win this season that he felt like he was in a groove, Lee said he didn’t know.

“I just wanted to win,” he said. “Everybody always says that we’re going to lose. Just win. That’s my goal.”

During the game, Lee had touchdown runs from 10, 40, 63, 10 and 1 yard out. His long gains of 40 and 63 yards came in the third quarter.

For the 63-yard score, Lee said he ran a counter play to the left.

“I knew they were fixing to block and I just cut (left),” he said. “It was either Austin (Huckabaa), Levi (Horn) or Dee Dee (Damyune Scott) blocking. I knew it was going to be there.”

With his vast running prowess shown on the field last week, it looked like Lee’s been playing football all of his life.

In fact, the sophomore is enjoying his third season on the gridiron. Before coming to RLHS, Lee had stints at Andalusia and Straughn.

“I’ve always liked it,” Lee said when asked about why he likes football. “When I went to a different school, I didn’t really care about it then.”

One thing he loves most about being a Red Level Tiger is his team as a whole.

“I just like all of my teammates,” he said. “We just all care about each other.”

Lee and Red Level will kick off against Kinston this week for their final home game of the season on Friday.
