CCB Community Bank is sponsoring a shred day, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. this Fri., Oct. 3.

Joy Norris, CCB’s marketing manager, said Cintas, the shred company that disposes of the bank’s documents, will be on site at the bank, located on East Three Notch, to shred materials.

“We encourage customers to bring old documents to be shredded,” Norris said. “We stress awareness of fraud and identity theft. People don’t realize when you throw away documents, or provide information in answering texts and emails, thieves can get enough information to steal an identity.”

Electronic and phone inquiries are increasingly used to steal information, she said.

“People should really stop and think before they provide any information. Banks and credit card companies have that information on file. Always pick up the phone and call us before you answer those.”

But paper can still put provide information to those who’d use it for no good.

“We don’t have any limitation on the amount of documents you can shred,” she said. “Many businesses need to shred documents, and individuals do, too.”

Cintas cannot shred information in binders or metal objects like CDs, but it is not necessary to remove staples, gem clips, or rubber bands from papers.

This is the second year CCB has provided this service to customers. A similar event is planned at the bank’s Opp branch from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Oct. 17.
