Runners needed for annual Scarecrow 5K

There is nothing frightening about the 3rd Annual Scarecrow 5K Trail Run/Walk, in fact the location is beautiful.
“We would like for everybody to come out and run,” said Chuck Burgess, event organizer and Opp Rotarian. “This will be our third race that we have hosted at the park.”
The race will be held at Frank Jackson State Park on Oct. 18, with parts of the run/walk going through the Scarecrows in the Park displays.
“It’s just a beautiful place to have a race, it’s overlooking the lake,” he said. “Part of the race will be over the walking trails where the scarecrows are placed.”
He said the weather should also be exceptional for this event.
“It’s in the cool of the morning, and it’s a beautiful place to run and beautiful time of year,” Burgess said.
The race will begin and end at the boat launch and there will be a water station halfway through the race for the runners, he said.
Pre-registration is required before Oct. 10 and those who pre-register are guaranteed a T-shirt, but T-shirts may still be available the day of the race.
Burgess said he looks for participation from area residents as it has been in the past.
“In the past it’s been area residents and we’ve had a lot of participation from Fort Rucker,” he said. “We’re hoping they will participate again.”
He said he’s looking for participation from Andalusia, Elba, Florala, Kinston, Brantley and Luverne like previous years.
The proceeds from this event go to help the Opp Rotary Club with their community projects, which include scholarship programs, Boy Scouts, literacy center, dictionary project, Camp ASCCA and many other projects.
