Straughn tourney isn’t your normal round robin

Looking at Straughn’s volleyball tournament lineup, the first thing that struck my brain was that it was just another round robin tournament.
Upon further reflection and talking with other coaches, the tournament — which is slated for Saturday at SHS — is anything but a round robin tournament.
There are five teams with single-digit losses competing in the exhibition.
Straughn, Brantley, T.R. Miller, Pleasant Home and Ariton are playing in the tournament, which guarantees each team four matches the all-day affair.
“That’s one of the reasons why we’re having it as a round robin,” SHS head volleyball coach Daniel Rodgers said about playing high-caliber teams multiple times. “And we only have one set of nets. We’re trying to slowly build a volleyball program here at Straughn where we can venture out and do more things.”
Action gets under way at 8 a.m. with Straughn facing Brantley. T.R. Miller follows with a match against Pleasant Home at 9.
The rest of the day’s schedule is the following: Brantley vs. Ariton, 10 a.m.; Straughn vs. T.R. Miller, 11 a.m.; PHS vs. AHS, noon; BHS vs. TRM, 1 p.m.; SHS vs. AHS, 2 p.m.; PHS vs. BHS, 3 p.m.; AHS vs. TRM, 4 p.m.; and SHS vs. PHS, 5 p.m.
“It’s going to be very competitive,” PHS head volleyball coach Jerry Davis said. “I don’t think anybody’s going into a match that’s guaranteed nothing.”
Davis aded that every team is going to have to play hard or have their tails handed to them.
“It wouldn’t be a real embarrassment if we (PHS) finish 0-4, but I don’t want that to happen to us,” he said. “There’s not a bad team in it.”
Matches will begin as soon as the preceding match ends. There will be the standard 5-5-2 warm up period before each team’s first match of the day. The later matches will have a 2-2-1 warm up period. The home team is listed first in the match ups listed earlier in this column.
Admission is $5 per person. The fee gets you access for the day’s worth of matches.
Rodgers said there will be plenty to eat at the concession stand.
“We hope to have a good crowd and they’ll be able to see some good volleyball,” he said.
