Pleasant Home will be playing a “good” and “athletic” New Brockton Gamecocks tonight for its season opener at Eagles Field.

Eagles head football coach Chris Mason said the players are excited to get the season going.

“They’re going to run the veer, and we’re going to have to be disciplined and play assignment football,” Mason said. “If we do the little things right and keep the ball in front of us. They have athletes who like to get on the edge, and as long as we can keep them pinned in, then all will be good.”

Mason said one of the team’s defensive mottos is to make them snap it one more time.

The Eagles will be facing a familiar face on New Brockton’s sideline. Former Florala head football coach Justin Jones is at the helm of the Gamecocks in his first year.

Jones coached at FHS during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Mason said the Gamecocks have a quarterback who transferred to two different schools during the spring before landing at NBHS.

Additionally, NBHS has a good running back along with others who pose a threat, the coach said.

As far as the game plan, Mason said the Eagles will do what’s been the central point of their identity.

“We’re not going to try to do anything that’s not us,” Mason said. “We’re more worried about us than (New Brockton). Hopefully if we fix us, then good things will happen.

“We’ve got to be mistake-free and win the turnover battle,” he said. “We’re excited to play in front of the home crowd. Win, lose or draw, all I ask of them is to give me 100 percent every play.”
