Twelve-year-old Aalyyah Franklin may enjoy her evening strolls with friends, but she would give them up in a heartbeat if the Dozier Town Council were to implement a curfew.

The subject came up during the council’s July meeting and was up for discussion again at Monday’s meeting. The council asked the town’s attorney to look into the legality of imposing a curfew on residents under the age of 18.

“We don’t want to step on anyone’s civil rights,” said Mayor Roger Moody

He said the town’s deputy encouraged implementing a curfew. “We haven’t had a lot of trouble, but we’ve had a little bit,” he added.

“I think it’s great,” said Franklin. “Because there’s a lot of stuff going on … people stealing, flooding houses, knocking on doors in the middle of the night.”

The council was prepared for the first reading of a drafted curfew ordinance, but the town’s attorney had a family emergency. Moody said the council would publicize any decision made, but the process would take at least two months. At the next meeting, the council would have its first reading of the ordinance and in October, members could vote on the matter.

“Hopefully, we’ll have something you can read by next month’s meeting,” Moody said.
