Rain, thunder and lightning swept through the area Tuesday night, delaying the 2014 Babe Ruth 14-year-old State Baseball Tournament championship game at Andalusia High School.

Monroe County led 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning when the rain stopped play at 4:16 p.m.

Tournament officials were aiming to start the game again at 8:30 last night.

In earlier action and to get to the championship, Monroe County defeated Wetumpka 13-1 in five innings; and Sylacauga stymied a late Mathews Park surge to hold off and win, 9-5 in the single elimination bracket play.

Sylacauga 9, Mathews Park 5

Cameron Oden went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple to lead Sylacauga; Andrew Padget went 2-for-4; and Tyler Carter had a triple. Garrett Vick went 3-for-4.

For Mathews Park, Patrick Wallace went 2-for-3; Jake Williams went 2-for-4; and Shaun Pulliam and Tucker Drago had two hits each.

Sylacauga scored two runs in the first inning, one run each in the second and fourth, and five runs in the sixth.

Mathews Park scored two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh.

Monroe County 13, Wetumpka 1

Monroe County scored two runs in the first, four in the second, five in the third and two in the fourth.

Griffin McKenzie went 3-for-4 with two runs to lead MC; Dalton McKenzie went 2-for-4; and Noah Gooden went 2-for-3.

Andalusia 12, Covington County 6

Andalusia scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie and went on to beat Covington County 12-6 Monday night.

In the fourth, Andalusia’s Will Clark reached on a hit by pitch to load the bases that ended up paving the way for the next three runs to score on passed balls.

Grant Holley scored on the first passed ball to give the Bulldogs the lead at 5-4, and Brennan Strong came in next followed by Clark for a 7-4 advantage.

To round out the scoring in the inning, Sebaskin Stallworth scored on a fielder’s choice; Thomas Phillips scored on a passed ball; and Noah Kelly scored on a sac fly.

Andalusia added two runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles from Jake Walker and Clark.

Covington County added two runs in the top of the seventh to make things interesting, but couldn’t catch up to the big Andalusia lead.

CC scored three runs in the top of the second inning, but the Bulldogs cut it to one run in the bottom half of the same frame.

James Hawkins hit an RBI single to give county a 3-1 advantage in the second, and later in the third, Parker Grooms scored on an error to make it 4-2.

Clark hit an RBI triple, and Stallworth score in the third to tie it at 4-all.

Clark went 2-for-3 to lead the Bulldogs. Thomas Phillips, Holley and Kelly had one hit each.

Hogan Nichols, Aaron Warthen and Grooms had one hit each for county.

In other action, Mims Park defeated Opp, 11-8.

Lane Worley went 2-for-3 with two runs; and Ethan Baker went 2-for-3 to lead the Bobcats in the loss.
