35 Andalusia swimmers gain berths to Birmingham

Thirty-five Andalusia Stingrays qualified for the state swim meet in Saturday’s district meet at the Westgate Recreation Center in Dothan.

Of those 35 qualifiers, 32 qualified in individual events and the Stingrays as a team finished in second place, just nine points shy of first-place winner, Dothan.

“This is a large group that will be making the trip to Birmingham in two weeks,” Stingrays advanced coach Gavin Donaldson said.

Stingrays beginners coach Carrie Browning said she thought her group did well and noted that all first-timers earned a spot at the state meet.

“Almost every child dropped one time,” Browning said. “Overall, we just did better than expected. All of my first-year swimmers are going to state in one event. I’m just extremely pleased.”

Andy Shaddix, the Stingrays’ intermediate coach, said the whole team did well.

“In some ways as a coach, you can look back and say, ‘yeah, we lost by nine points and we could’ve done better,'” Shaddix said. “But for us to be where we are at the end of the year from where we started, we just didn’t know how good we were going to be.”

The top four swimmers in each event automatically qualify for the state meet. Those who finish from 5-16 also get a berth.
