Mark Price’s passion for the game of football knows no bounds.

One of Red Level’s new assistant coaches, Price will be taking charge of the Tigers’ defensive line this fall.

Like his coaching colleague, DeWayne Robinson, Price asked RLS head football coach David Godwin if he could help out.

“I told him that I was willing to do whatever is necessary,” Price said.

Price, who is a member of Red Level’s Quarterback Club, said he has always been around and watched games, and decided that he could be of service.

Last year, Price retired from a 22-year stint in the U.S. Army, and the volunteer coach has been on the Tigers’ staff since March.

In the spring game, the Tigers defeated Zion Chapel 58-8. Most of the damage from RLS came from its stout defensive front.

Price said fans will be impressed with what his defensive line — Ontaryo Nearor, AJ Nicholson and Jeffrey Perdue — will bring to the gridiron this season.

“They’re just beasts,” he said. “All three of them are beasts. If they play every play like it’s the last play, then we won’t need a cornerback, linemen or a line backers.”

On the team overall, Price said there is room for improvement.

“You know where they’re coming from,” he said. “They’re 1-29, and there are a lot of things that can be worked on — every facet of the game. You’re dealing with a lot of men who want and need discipline.”

Price is originally from Ohio, and his daughter, Hunter, attends RLHS and cheers on the cheer squad.

While in the Army, he served in Bosnia in 1996, and in Afghanistan from 2002-03. Price’s first 10 years in the military were spent in combat arms, and the last 12 were spent as an area leader, or the equivalent of being a guidance counselor in high school and college, but for the reserves.

Football is Price’s favorite sport, he said, because it takes “team work, unity, grit, determination; and there’s a lot of passion in the game.”

Price is also married to Sharon.
