Opp did what it had to do to come out on the winning end of things this weekend in the 8U Cal Ripken District Baseball Tournament at Johnson Park.

The Bobcats put together a hitting clinic for all to see as they compiled 23 hits in a 12-2 victory over Brewton in the finals to force a winner-take-all game tomorrow for the championship.

In earlier action, Opp punched its ticket to the state tournament by dispatching Covington County 15-9 in the elimination bracket’s title game this afternoon.

CC, who got off to a great start in the tournament, dropped to the bottom bracket after suffering a tough 9-8 loss to Brewton. Trailing 8-3, the Tigers scored six runs in the last inning to win it.

In other action Saturday, Opp defeated East Brewton 11-2, and topped Evergreen 19-1 to inch its way closer to the title game.

Andalusia fell to East Brewton 12-6 in early action Saturday.

Tomorrow night, the Bobcats face Brewton at 6 in the tournament championship.

In the finals tonight, Opp scored two runs in the first inning, four runs in the third and six runs in the fifth.

Jake Coon, Nick King and Al Hightower went 3-for-3 each; Colby Ballard, Cade Jones, Andrew Danford, Xander Scroggins, Trey Bradley and Griffen Pierce went 2-for-3 each to lead the Bobcats.

Brewton couldn’t get anything going on its bats as it only had 19 batters up in the game.

Opp had good defensive play on the infield and made one heck-of-a play from the outfield in the third inning with a 10-3 put out.

Brewton’s Brodie Anthony went 2-for-2 to lead the Tigers.

 

Opp 15, Covington County 9

Ballard, Coon and King went 3-for-3 each to lead Opp. Danford, Will Boyd, Scroggins and Bradley had two hits each.

The Bobcats scored two runs in the first inning, eight runs in the second and five runs in the fourth.

Covington County narrowed the gap in the second inning to cut it to 10-4 with two runs plated and got within striking distance in the fourth, but the Bobcats widened the gap with their five runs.

Ty Clark and Layne Grantham went 3-for-3 each; Parker Adams and Trevin Garner went 2-for-3 each; and Grant Barnes went 1-for-3 to lead CC.
