Girls workouts in full force

Local girls haven’t been afraid to get a little sweaty this summer as they have been busy working out for the coming 2014-15 athletic calendar.
The main sports girls are working out for are volleyball, basketball and softball, to name a few.
Because it has so many girls playing multiple sports, Andalusia holds workouts for girls in all sports, including cheerleading.
“We have all the girl athletes in the school lifting weights Tuesday and Thursday nights,” AHS girls basketball coach Brad Garner said. “All of their coaches are in there with them.”
Garner said the girls do participate in a weight program, and typically will focus on one particular area of the body.
For example, the cheerleaders will do upper body work on Tuesdays, and then lower body work on Thursdays, he said.
“On Tuesday we had 40 girls, so it’s going well,” Garner said.
At Straughn, girls are working out Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the month of June, which has been set aside for basketball and softball practice as well.
“In July, after we get back from the fourth, we’ll still working out again on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, but we’ll have volleyball specific practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” SHS volleyball coach Daniel Rodgers said.
Rodgers said the volleyball team will participate in a Troy camp July 17-18, and will play in a playdate July 31 at T.R. Miller.
In other sports at SHS, girls are working out for basketball and softball during the same days as volleyball.
OHS volleyball coach Bridgett Brantley said the girls are coming in three days a week and working on drills for two hours in the gym, and then spending the last hour in the weight room.
Additionally, Brantley said she was able to send the seventh and eighth graders, along with the junior varsity and varsity squads to camps in Enterprise last week; and Troy came and held a camp with the girls.
Pleasant Home’s Lady Eagles meet every Monday and Tuesday nights in June for basketball, and the same two nights in July for volleyball, girls coach Jerry Davis said.
“Right now, we’re trying to develop more fundamentals and the handling skills of basketball,” Davis said. “We’re just trying to get a little better in those areas. It’s going fine so far.”
Red Level volleyball coach Gail Lee said the Lady Tigers won’t be starting workouts until next week.
