5 locals selected as honorable mentions on teams

Five local players were selected as honorable mentions on the 2014 Alabama Sports Writers Association’s All-State softball team, which was released today.

Straughn’s Katelyn Kinsaul and Paige Taylor; and Opp’s Laiken Free and Kelley Pierce are honorable mentions on the Class 3A team; and Florala’s Lily Ritzel is an honorable mention on the Class 1A team.

Kinsaul, at catcher, finished the season with a .409 batting average (BA). She scored 43 runs, hit 22 RBIs and put together seven doubles and one triple.

Behind the plate on defense, Kinsaul, a junior, had a .976 on-field percentage, only allowing five runners to steal second base. Additionally, she only made four errors all season.

Taylor, a junior first baseman, raked in a .418 BA and hit 32 RBIs, eight doubles and one home run. Her on-base percentage was right at .482, and slugging percentage was at .525.

Free, a senior at third base, had a .380 BA with 46 hits and 45 RBIs on the year. She hit 12 doubles and five triples with one home run.

Pierce, a senior and outfielder, hit . 429 with 51 hits on 119 at bats.

Ritzel, at pitcher, struck out 245 batters and allowed 50 earned runs on 90 hits for a 2.30 ERA for her sophomore year. Her best game came in a 21-strikeout effort against W.S. Neal.

Ritzel was a first-team All-State selection last season.

Straughn, Opp and Florala made it all the way to the 2014 South Regional in Gulf Shores before ending their respective seasons.

 

Brantley’s Alex Wilcox was selected as a first-team pitcher after an incredible year on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs.

Wilcox, who was also selected as the Class 1A Pitcher of the Year by the ASWA, topped the list of nominations in strikeouts with 366 and compiled a 1.12 earned run average and a 0.57 whip.

BHS won its first state championship as a fast-pitch softball school this season.
