Straughn senior Taylor Messick was one of 10 coaches children selected as scholarship winners by the scholarship committee of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association.

Messick will receive a $1,000 need-based scholarship, which is awarded to college-bound students whose parents are active members of the AHSADCA. Messick’s dad, Ricky, is a coach at SHS.

“I’m honored they chose me to get it and all,” Taylor said. “It’s really going to help out a lot toward school and all of that.”

Taylor will attend LBWCC next year, where he is a verbal commit to play baseball for the Saints.

SHS assistant coach Ray Wilson gave the graduating senior an application for the scholarship about two months ago.

When asked what made him decide to play at LBW next year, Messick said the school is a lot closer to home.

“You get to meet new people, too,” he said. “I’m going to go to Auburn after LBW, so this way I won’t have to go trying to find a roommate.”

In addition to the scholarship awarded by the AHSADCA, Messick will attend LBW on an honors scholarship.

Taylor is the son of Ricky and Lori Messick; and is the brother to Katy.
