Andalusia holds sports banquet

A packed Bulldog Bistro highlighted Andalusia’s spring sports banquet Tuesday night at the high school.
Each of the six sports programs were recognized for their achievements during their respective seasons.
Andalusia’s baseball team finished in the third round of the Class 4A state playoffs. The Bulldogs fell to Childersburg in a two-game sweep, and finished the season 22-12.
AHS baseball coach Tyler Dent recognized the junior varsity and varsity teams, and thanked the Diamond Dolls, parents, assistant coaches and those close with the program for their help this year.
Daniel Henderson earned the Highest GPA Award; Quinton Maddox was named Team Captain; and Justin Scherzinger was named the Bulldogs’ MVP.
For softball, AHS coach Brad Garner gave letterman awards to the JV and varsity squads, and awarded Haley Harper the Newcomer of the Year Award; Andi Hughes the Academic Award; named Emily Terry the Offensive and Defensive MVP Awards; and Hughes and Terry as Team Captains.
Bulldogs soccer coach Tim Ramsden recognized each player and then awarded special awards.
Jaxon Rudolph was given the Bulldog Spirit Award; Adam Peek won the Most Improved Player Award; Wain Yongkuma was named the Offensive MVP, and was tied with James Albritton for scoring the most goals this season; Zach Parker won the Defensive Player of the Year Award, was named the MVP and the Coach’s Player of the Year Award.
For the boys tennis team, Bulldogs coach Perry Dillard recognized each player and talked about their state-round success this year.
Willie Riedel won the Rookie of the Year Ward; Ian Peek was named the MVP; David May received the Bulldog Award; Brandon Scruggs and Jackson Moore were named Team Captains; and Moore won the Academic Award.
In girls tennis, letter awards were given to each player before special awards were received by Sarah Atkinson and Karlee Shirey for being named Team Captains; Shirey for being awarded the Most Improved and Academic Awards; and Rachel Dayton being named MVP.
Andalusia’s Jackson Thompson won the Newcomer of the Year Award; Cal McCalman won the Most Improved Award and the Low Medalist of the Year Award; Jonathan Bryant won the Highest GPA Award; and Lars Whisonant and McCalman were named Team Captains for the Bulldogs golf team.
