Florala football players and the community at large have been pretty excited about spring training this last week, Wildcats coach Bubba Nall said.

For the past week or so, FHS has fielded 55 players — up 14 from last year — so that coaches can make evaluations and see where each could fit on the gridiron.

“Our numbers right now are good,” Nall said. “People are excited, our kids are excited.”

Last season, the Wildcats lost six seniors. One of them was the quarterback.

Nall said other than finding a quarterback, the need to improve on defense is great.

“Like I told our coaches and kids, people know us by our (split veer) offense,” he said. “We’re one of three teams that I know of that use it. But, if we’re going to win, we’re going to have to do it on defense.”

Nall said both the players and coaches have accepted the new line of thinking on the FHS team.

“We’re evaluating kids and moving kids around,” Nall said. “We know people who can play certain spots. (Spring training) is not the end all and be all. I want to win (our spring game) and we’re going try to answer. This is where our kids learn how to play.

“By next fall when we start in August, that’s when it really matters,” he said. “They’re working their rear-ends off. We’re excited about the game.”

The Wildcats will visit Kinston on Thursday for their spring game. The junior varsity squad starts at 5:30 p.m. against KHS and Cottonwood. The varsity will then take the field afterward and play CHS and Rocky Bayou.
