The roughly 9,000 cable subscribers in Andalusia and Opp can rest assured they are not going to lose any channels, following negotiations between providers and the company Viacom over subscription fees.

Over the past week, subscribers to Andy Cable and Opp Cable have seen scrolling messages from Viacom stating the system would be shutting down around 24 channels.

Andy Cable co-owner Ivan Bishop said Wednesday that is not likely to happen.

“We are members of the National Cable Television Cooperative,” Bishop said. “They handle negotiations for us and they have hammered out an agreement. We don’t even know what it is yet. But the long and short of it is customers won’t lose channels.”

Stacey Parker, general manager and CFO of Opp Utilities, said the negotiations came on the heels of hefty price increase of subscription fees by Viacom. Parker said the increase was so big, companies were having to consider raising customer rates or cutting out channels provided by Viacom instead of simply absorbing the fees as they do now.

Parker said the agreement between NCTC and Viacom was reached late Tuesday, and specifics of the deal have not yet been released.

Opp Cable services approximately 3,500 customers in Opp, while Andy Cable provides video service for around 5,500 subscribers in the Andalusia area.
