An upswing in the number of marijuana-related arrests continued last weekend in Covington County, but also included a bust that netted heroin.

River Falls Police Chief Greg Jackson said he made a total of 13 weekend arrests for marijuana possession, one of which led to the discovery of “2-to-3 grams” of heroin.

“I don’t have an official weight on it, but it was a couple of grams,” Jackson said. “It wasn’t a huge amount, but anytime it’s heroin, it’s a concern.”

Jackson said the heroin was discovered during a routine traffic stop that also netted marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and ended in the arrest of 39-year-old Patrick Lucas.

“He was on his way from Cape Coral, Fla., to Kansas City, Kan.,” Jackson said. “He was pretty cooperative, and told us where he was going.”

Lucas was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance (heroin) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jackson said Lucas was booked into the Covington County Jail on $20,500 bond, and represents one of a few examples of hard-core narcotics that have been discovered over the past several weeks.

Beginning earlier this month, law enforcement agencies across the county have upped patrols due to increased traffic during the spring break season. While the majority of incidents have uncovered marijuana and minors in possession of alcohol, methamphetamines, heroin and the relatively new drug Molly have all been discovered during routine traffic stops in locations ranging from River Falls to Florala.
