Local athletes chosen for Bryant-Jordan awards

Andalusia’s Daniel Henderson, Florala’s Hailey Maxey and Opp’s Jacob Johnson were selected as 2014 Bryant-Jordan Student regional award winners.

Henderson was selected as the Class 4A, Region 1 winner of the scholar-athlete award, while Maxey and Johnson were picked for the student athlete achievement awards in Class 1A and 3A, respectively.

The winners were announced by Bryant-Jordan Director Shelton Thompson on Friday afternoon.

Forty-eight seniors, eight in each of the six Alabama High School Athletic Association’s current six classifications were selected as scholar-athlete regional winners and 48 in the student-achievement division, according to a press release from the athletic association.

All 96 winners will be recognized at the 2014 Bryant-Jordan Awards Banquet April 14, at the Birmingham Sheraton Hotel Ballroom.

Each regional winner receives a $2,500 scholarship and each class winners will get an additional $3,000 scholarship. The overall Larry D. Striplin Jr. Scholar-Athlete Award and the overall Ken Betty Joy Blankenship Achievement Award state winners will also receive an additional $3,000 each.

Regional winners are also eligible to receive several other scholarships that will be awarded by 14 Alabama four-year colleges and 14 Alabama community colleges participating in the program.

Additionally, each school that has an individual classification winner will receive a $2,000 award.
