Pleasant Home’s got a tough task ahead as its boys and girls basketball squads visit Brantley tonight for the Class 1A South Sub-Regional.

The South Sub-Regional is a qualifying game to play in the South Regional, which will be held at Dothan’s Civic Center next week.

For the boys, the Eagles (8-17) will face the fifth-ranked Bulldogs for the first time all year.

The big key for PHS tonight is stopping BHS senior guard Wesley Person, Eagles coach Bradley Stephens said.

“We’re just going to have to do the best we can to try and limit Person,” Stephens said. “He’s the key to them really getting going.

“When I say limit — he’s averaging close to 30 points per game — we’ve got to do something to keep him from completely taking over the gall game,” he said. “We’re just going to have to play tough on the inside.”

Stephens said he considers Person to be a Division 1 athlete, and that it’s rare to find an athlete of his caliber playing for a 1A school.

The Lady Eagles will play the defending state champions in the third-ranked Lady Bulldogs, and PHS coach Jerry Davis said it’s going to be a “David and Goliath” type matchup.

“They’ve got most of them all back,” Davis said. “If we can cut the turnovers down and slow the transition game down a little bit — those are the two biggest keys.

“Now, if it was half court to half court, then I’d feel decent about it,” he said.

Unfortunately, the BHS girls and boys pride themselves on a full-court press game, forcing turnovers and getting quick transition buckets.

When asked if size will be a factor tonight for the boys, Stephens said it’s a two-edged sword.

“Yes and no,” he said. “Brantley likes to really go. We really want to slow the game down and make them set up their offense. Most of the time, they get down the court and get a quick shot off. If we can control the pace of the game, it puts it in our favor.”

Davis said he’s happy to still be playing basketball, and there could be some upsets — statewide — tonight.

“You can’t win if you don’t play it,” Davis said. “That’s where you’re at. We’re glad we’re still playing and still have an opportunity. We’re going to give it a shot and see where it falls.”

Tip off for the girls is at 5:30 p.m. The boys game will follow at 7.
