Opp native and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Jim Lawrence spoke to the Andalusia Lions Club Wed., Feb 5. Lawrence spoke about how important it is to serve one’s country and community, either through military service or through other venues such as the Lions, Civitan or Rotary clubs, veterans groups, or church organizations.
Lawrence also spoke about the contents of two books he has written, “Airman’s Odyssey: An Air Force Special Operator’s Incredible Journey” and “American Veterans: Their Stories of Service and Valor,” both published through Deeds Publishing. Lawrence detailed several of the stories of local area veterans who came from ordinary places such as Babbie, Opp, Gantt, Andalusia, McKenzie and Florala. The common theme of each man’s military service, he said, was extraordinary courage in time of battle, as well as contributions to their community after military service ended. Lawrence also discussed the contributions of the spouses of disabled veterans.
Lawrence said all of the stories bring to mind the selfless sacrifices made by local veterans, and are a reminder of what a rich heritage there is in the Covington County area.
Lawrence was accompanied by his wife, JoAnn, as well as his sister Hettie and her husband, retired USAF Col. David Myers.
