Opp Council looks at $5M in improvements

The Opp City Council is looking ahead to improvement plans it hopes to implement between now and 2017.
During the regular meeting Tuesday, the council unanimously approved a new, three-year capital improvement plan carrying a price tag of more than $5 million, with improvements to streets and facilities, as well as new equipment for police and road crews among the items on the list. Mayor John Bartholomew said it is important for people to realize that the plan was compiled from ideas from the council, but is not based on the current budget, adding revenue will have to be generated for many of the items on the list.
In other business, the council:
• Approved the transfer of a retail beer license for off premises use to Shaleh Inc., located at 513 Florala Hwy.;
• approved a resolution to repave W. Cummings Ave. using federal ATRIP funds of $578,904 and a matching 20 percent in the sum of $144,726 in city funds, for a total of $723,630;
• approved a resolution declaring properties a public nuisance, including properties located at 1600 W. Cummings Ave., 308 2nd St., 105 Morgan St., 1300 Old Perry Store Rd., 111 Kolb Ave., 310 Hardin St., 300 Danley Ave., 400 S. College St., 315 S. College St., 303 S. College St., 321 S. College St., 317 S. College St. and 220 W. Covington Ave. Those property owners will have 30 days following an official notice to abate the nuisance before the city steps in and does so at cost to the owner.
• approved a resolution to abate nuisances at 402 Dorsey St., 605 W. Ida Ave. and 125 Terri Dr. after the properties were declared a nuisance in 2013 and owners failed to abate the nuisances.
• approved Ordinance 2014-01, to sell surplus city land to Custom Collars for the sum of $194,936.
