There’s a certain art to being a teacher – which is exactly how Cathy Powell was chosen as the Andalusia Chamber of Commerce’s teacher of the year for 2014.
For more than 21 years, Powell has educated students in the Andalusia City School System, recently as a gifted education teacher and now as a music and art teacher at AES.
A master’s degree level teacher, Powell’s list of achievements and accolades is as long as her history within the system; however, one of her greatest accomplishments – in her opinion – is exposing children to the arts.
“(Powell’s) positive attitude and enthusiasm is contagious to all of our students and faculty, and her creative abilities are second to none,” said AES Principal Patty Taylor.
Recently, Powell organized a school-wide Christmas program and has introduced a new art program at AES.
“(Powell) constantly provides students with an opportunity to push themselves beyond what they thought they could do,” said fellow teacher Barbara Peek. “That connection is what can make a difference is a student’s life.”
