It’s all about the deals today as scores of shoppers hit the avenues for those after-Christmas sales.

The Alabama Retail Association expects the 2013 taxed holiday sales to reach $8.9 billion – an increase of at least 2 percent than the $8.7 billion spent during last November and December.

If that prediction holds true, Alabamians should spend almost $175 million more this holiday season than in 2012 on taxed purchases.

Today, area retailers will begin their after-Christmas markdowns – a move that is sure to help make ARA’s prediction a reality.

Bethany Whatley of Andalusia said she hopes Santa brings her cash so that she can take advantage of those deals.

“If I get money, then I’m going shopping for decorations for my kitchen,” Whatley said. “What will I buy? Whatever I like.”

Heather Gamble of the Red Oak Community said she would not be braving the crowds.

“I don’t care what kind of sale it is,” Gamble said. “I need some peace and quiet.”

Haley Carnley and her sister Ciera Hughes of Florala said today will be the third day in a multi-state shopping spree.

“And we’re shopping for clothes,” Carnley said. “We’re always hopeful that we can find a good deal.”

Gay Burleson of Florala said she would also be avoiding the crowds.

“Shopping the day after Christmas? Not his mom-ma,” she said.

Frien-ds Diane Rodgers and Pauline Metcalf of Opp will be at the local big box store as soon as it opens.

“We’ll be shopping for everything that’s 50 percent off,” Rodgers said. “All the Christmas decorations and such to get ready for next year.”

Metcalf said she plans to stock up on discounted gift items.

“I love the gift sets and perfumes and lotions,” she said. “They make excellent gifts throughout the year.”
