Today is a good day to stay at home if you are the superstitious type, but many local residents are planning to spend the second Friday the 13th of 2013 focusing on happier things.

Responding to a Star-News Facebook question about how the infamous date will affect everyday life in the area, most people said broken mirrors and black cats were the furthest thing from their minds.

Andalusia resident Jennifer Clark Sanders said she will be counting her blessings today.

“My last baby will celebrate her one-year birthday,” Sanders said. “Blessed is how I view every day.”

Jen Nall, of Andalusia, said she too will spend her day celebrating.

“My parents will be married for 50 years (today),” Nall said.

Anita Owens said she might put the bad-luck superstition to the test.

“Think I’ll go to the casino and try my luck,” Owens posted with a cyber-smile.

Andalusia’s Lori Barnes said, “It’s my birthday, so I think it’s lucky.”

Sonia Henderson Wallace agrees.

“My grandmother gave birth to her only two children five years and three months apart,” she said. “Both on Friday the 13th. I’d say it was a pretty lucky day for her.”

Phyllis Gray said Friday the 13th is a rough day around her house, but the sullen mood stems from bad memories, not superstition.

“My husband was in a horrific car accident years ago,” Gray said via Facebook. “(It) crushed his skull. (He) was in a coma for 47 days and nights and in a body cast for a year and nine months. Then, 30 years later, his newborn baby died. Both incidents occurred in the month of July. So he does not like any Fridays that land on the 13, especially if it is the month of July. It simply brings back memories for him and is depressing.”

Emily Yehling said, for her, it is truly just another day.

“Not superstitious,” she posted. “I will get up and get ready for work and go to work. Business as usual for me!”

Whether superstition holds water or not, it seems the Andalusia area will be mostly worry-free today.
