This weekend’s deadline for dropping off toys for the 2013 Andalusia Community Christmas event is approaching quickly, but program director Larry Avery said there are still opportunities for people to get in on the giving.

ACC Inc. is a non-profit annual program funded by the citizens and civic clubs of Andalusia. ACC assists families in financial crisis who live in the Andalusia, Straughn, Red Level and Pleasant Home School districts by providing toys and clothing for children between the ages of two and 13.

Local residents can support ACC by adopting angels found on “Angel Trees” at area businesses.

Avery said approximately 15 trees can be found throughout the Andalusia area, but most are out of angels.

“Most places are sold out of them,” he said. “They are doing pretty good. But there are still some places with angels left. I think Winn Dixie and some area banks still have some. I know Walmart is out.”

Avery said nearly 400 kids were registered for the program this year, adding that parents and guardians listed clothing sizes and toys requested by the children, which were then printed on the back of the individual angels. He said that $60 is the recommended amount to be spent on each child.

“ I think (the angels) are going fine,” he said. “But, we really won’t know until this Friday and Saturday when people start bringing their packages.”

Those packages can be dropped off at the Kiwanis Center on Fri., Dec. 6, from 1 until 5 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. until noon; and on Sun., Dec. 8, from 1 until 5 p.m.

Avery said the toys and clothing will be distributed at the Kiwanis building Fri., Dec. 20, at 6:30 p.m.

“We’ll have a big Christmas party out there for them,” Avery said. “We’ll also have drawings for 120 bicycles.”

Avery said, in the event that all angels are not adopted, ACC will purchase presents for the remaining children.

“We made a commitment to them once they sign up, and we will take care of them,” he said. Avery said money used to purchase any remaining presents comes from donations.
