There’s a machine for that. And apps, or programs, to expand the creative ways to use them.

Whether you are considering a $99 investment for a basic machine or planning to buy a more sophisticate one, you get a little more if you buy locally from Andalusia Sewing Center, also known to locals as Singer’s.

“We service them and we teach you how to operate them,” owner David McBrayer said. “It doesn’t matter how much you paid for it if you don’t know how to use it.”

McBrayer and his wife, Lisa, opened their store with two tables of fabric 38 years ago. Now, they have the largest section drapery and upholstery fabric – and the best prices – in this part of the state.

“People drive from as far as Birmingham, Destin or Ft. Walton to get our fabric,” David said.

The store features a large collection of Fabric Finders fabric, frequently seen in the magazine Sew Beautiful. They also stock heirloom laces and batiste.

Holiday parties and company provide a great reason up update a home, and Lisa said many people choose December as the time to reupholster sofas and chairs, or to make table runners or replace draperies.

“There are lots of ways to spruce up or change little things,” she said.

One of the hottest trends going this holiday season is burlap. Andalusia Sewing Center has the popular fabric in stock in traditional colors, as well as in brown, orange, black, and holiday red and green.

The McBrayers remind local residents that shopping locally helps the local community, “especially our kids.”

The business, located in the Covington Mall in Andalusia, will be open this weekend to help customers get started on holiday shopping or holiday projects. Hours are from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. On Friday and 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday.
