An inmate from the Covington County Jail died at a local hospital Sunday.
Sheriff Dennis Meeks confirmed the man’s identity as 38-year-old Almus Taylor.
Jail reports show Taylor was arrested Saturday for driving under the influence by the Alabama State Troopers.
Meeks said Taylor did not die inside the jail; instead, he said, Taylor died while at the Andalusia Regional Hospital emergency room. He offered no further information on the incident and referred The Star-News to the Alabama State Troopers for comment.
Sgt. Steven Jarrett said that troopers responded to a “possible crash on Judge Smith Road on Nov. 16 just before 8 p.m.” Saturday.
“The trooper arrested the driver for DUI and placed him in the Covington County Jail at approximately 9:30 p.m.,” he said. “The following morning, Nov. 17, the subject was transported to Andalusia Regional Hospital by Advanced EMS at 6:20 a.m. The subject was pronounced dead at 7:25 a.m. that same morning.”
Meeks said Taylor’s body was sent to the state forensic lab for an autopsy at the request of the district attorney.
