Three Montgomery women trying to create their own holiday discounts at the Andalusia Walmart were still in the Covington County Jail Tuesday after nearly $2,000 worth of merchandise was taken, according to Andalusia Police Department Sgt. Jody Scott.
Scott said, 26-year-old Nahketa L. Jackson, 25-year-old Laytonia J. Dennard and 31-year-old Tankiya S. Rowden were each charged with theft of property II, after allegedly walking out the door with an array of items.
According to Scott, the three suspects entered the Walmart at approximately 11 p.m. and began filling shopping carts with items it appeared they intended to purchase.
Scott said Walmart employees notified the authorities after the women bypassed the cash registers; loaded the items into a vehicle; and fled the scene in the car.
APD officer Scott Watkins and Sgt. Nic Ireland, as well as the on-call investigator, responded to the store’s location and viewed video of the subjects leaving the store, while a county-wide description of the females and the vehicle was released.
Scott said, Opp police officer Cody Martin, later initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle fitting the description released, and made contact with the suspects. Martin also viewed merchandise matching the description of the stolen items in plain view inside the car.
Martin was assisted by APD Sgt. Thomas Sport in detaining the suspects.
Scott said four Camelio tablets; one Kurio 7S tablet; two Meep tablets; three XO tablets; three Kurio 4S tablets; various clothing items; two bedding sets; two bathroom sets; and other miscellaneous items, totaling $1,739.57, were recovered.
All three women were booked into the Covington County Jail, and each was held on a $20,000 bond.
