A man indicted in June for the 2005 attempted murder of a Wing man – and on the county’s first cold case task force roster – is now sitting in the Covington County Jail.
Shane D. Long, 27, is part of a father-son duo indicted on charges of attempted murder, robbery I and burglary I for a Dec. 31, 2005, home invasion on Henry Jordan and his family. His father, Jackie D. Long, is currently in an Alabama prison, awaiting trial.
Star-News archives show that the home invasion occurred on New Year’s Eve in 2005 and ended with Jordan being brutally assaulted inside his Ala. Hwy. 137 home. Jordan’s wife, children and grandchildren were also inside the home at the time.
The state contends that Jordan suffered injuries that contributed to his death in 2007.
“The Longs knocked on Mr. Jordan’s door and made entry in the predawn hours,” District Attorney Walt Merrell said in June. “They attempted to rob Mr. Jordan and commit a theft, but it went bad. Mr. Jordan suffered massive blunt force trauma to the left orbital socket and temple region and forehead. He also suffered a significant skull fracture and had permanent loss of sight in his left eye.”
Long and his son were taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force at their respective homes in Okaloosa and Santa Rosa, Fla., counties in June. Police reported that the younger Long resisted arrest and is facing charges from that incident in Santa Rosa County, Fla. Chief Deputy David Anderson of the Covington County Sheriff’s Office said the younger Long was transferred to the county jail from Florida Friday.
Long is currently being held in the county jail under a $450,000 bond.
