Dadgum rain.

That’s what a lot of folks were saying last night when the final game of day one of the 2013 16-18 Babe Ruth Baseball World Series was canceled because of rain and unsafe field conditions.

Host team Covington County was slated to start its pool play against Dexter, Mo., before the game was called at around 7 p.m.

World Series tournament director Bob Dickson came over the loud speaker at Crum Foshee Field and said it would’ve been “unfair to the players” to hold the game anyway.

Covington County will play Dexter at 9 a.m. today.

Afterward, normal pool play will resume at 11:30 a.m. between Columbia Basin, Wash. and Cape Cod, Mass.

Game six will be played at 2 p.m.; game seven will be held at 4:30 p.m.; and game eight will be held at 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service out of Mobile, there’s a 60 percent chance of rain today. Showers and thunderstorms are likely.

Shortly after the opening ceremonies, the rain started to drizzle onto LBWCC’s baseball field.

Game time, originally set for 7 p.m., was pushed back to 8 before the game was canceled because of the rain.

Before the opening ceremonies, Mid County, Texas, and the Mobile Rawdogs managed to squeeze in what would be the last game of the day.

Mid County defeated Mobile, 5-3.

Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mobile Rawdogs loaded the bases three times, but couldn’t get the needed runs across in the loss.

Mid County and Mobile were tied 1-1 after the second inning, but the Texas team added two runs in the top of the third for a small advantage.

The Rawdogs and Texas were scoreless in their next three innings.

Mid County pushed ahead 5-1, thanks to a two-run shot from Shea Richards, who went 1-for-4 for the contest.

Mobile, who was crowned the state champions, wasn’t going to give up that easy.

Gunner Hendrix led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, T.J. Dixon reached on a bunt single and Keegan Curtis hit a chopper up the middle to load the bases for the first time, all with no outs.

Mobile cut the game to 5-2 after a run scored on a fielder’s choice.

With the bases loaded a second time, Mobile scored its last run on a sac fly.

The last person to reach for the Rawdogs was Brian Lane, who loaded the bases the third time with two outs.

Curtis and John Peddrick went 2-for-4 each; Dixon went 1-for-4 to lead the Rawdogs.

Mid County’s Kanton Richard went 2-for-3 with two doubles; Richards had those two RBIs; and Aaron Graham went 2-for-3 to lead the Texans.

Mitchell Sanderson threw a complete game, striking out five batters and allowing three runs on seven hits for the win.

Jesse McCord struck out six and allowed five runs on six hits in seven innings for the Rawdogs.
