Spring break travel was good for Covington County – at least according to sales tax collection numbers.

The figures, which represent March and April sales remitted in the subsequent months, show a dramatic increase in county collections and good gains in the city of Andalusia’s collections.

Assistant County Administrator Pam Steele said $781,567 was remitted in April for March sales, while $677,470 was remitted to the county in May for April sales. Those totals bring the year-to-date collections at slightly more than $5.6 million.

“That makes our year-to-date collections up 7.97 percent from this same period last year,” Steele said. “And that’s good news.”

The city coffers reported an increase of 2.38 percent in YTD collections versus the same period last year.

Reports show that $372,210 was remitted in April for March sales, a 2 percent increase over the previous year, while $335,895 was remitted in May for April sales, a 5 percent increase over the previous year.

Those collections bring the fiscal YTD collection inside the city limits to $2.731 million.
