Members of Opp’s Downtown Revitalization Authority said last weekend’s “Backyard BBQ Bash” was a tremendous success.
“We cooked 14 Boston butts for the People’s Choice award and sold every plate of meat we could,” DRA president Bart Boothe said. “There were probably more than 200 people who came out to buy $5 plates and vote for the award.”
Boothe said a total of seven teams participated in the event, including one team that traveled from Birmingham. This is the first year Opp has hosted the barbecue, and Boothe said plans are already being made to hold another one in 2010.
DRA member Brett Ballard said the winning teams were:
Grand Champion — Cook’s Portable Smokehouse of Elba (L.C. Cook, captain).
People’s Choice Award — Bama’s Best BBQ of Opp.
Best chicken — first place: Cook’s Portable Smokehouse of Elba, second place: Paw Paw’s of Opp, third place: Tiger Smoke of Sanford.
Best ribs — first place: Paw Paw’s of Opp, second place: Cook’s Portable Smokehouse of Elba, third place: Bart M. Boothe LLC of Opp.
