AHSRA state finals continue today
Heat wasn’t the only thing cowboys and cowgirls were trying to beat Thursday night at the Alabama High School Rodeo Association State Finals.
Riders from across the state compete in several different boys and girls rodeo events to build up enough points to go to nationals in Rocky Springs, Wyo.
In Thursday morning’s first slack, Andalusia’s Gus Maraman pulled in a time of 12.39 seconds in his first try in the calf roping event. Maraman’s time was still the one to beat as of 8:30 later that night.
In the girls goat tying, Straughn’s Maggie Holmes finished in 13.51 seconds to lead the pack in her event.
Caleb Varner is sitting at fourth with 71 points in the steer wrestling event, and Luke Taylor is second in the boys cutting event.
Holmes is also sitting fourth in the pole bending category, and is in eighth place in the list of all-around cowgirl for the finals.
Every cowboy and cowgirl will be back in action this morning at 9 when the second slack will commence at the Covington Center Arena in Andalusia. The Go 2 Performance starts at 7:30 tonight.
Saturday’s Short Go, which will determine who advances to nationals, starts at 7:30 p.m.
Admission is $5 per person.
