MONTGOMERY — Pleasant Home came up a little bit short Saturday in the Class 1A State Softball Tournament at Lagoon Park.
The Lady Eagles led 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning and all but had the game sealed over rival Kinston.
However, the KHS scored three runs to top PHS 5-4 in the elimination bracket championship to end the Lady Eagles’ state run and 2013 season.
With this loss, the Lady Eagles finish third in the state in Class 1A, and 22-18-1 overall.
Fighting through the loser’s bracket earlier Saturday, the Lady Eagles defeated Ragland 6-1, and cruised to a 8-5 victory over Decatur Heritage in a rematch from Friday’s first-round game. PHS lost 7-5 to DHCA to be sent down to the loser’s bracket in action at Lagoon Park.
After each ball game, PHS team members get in a circle to pray about the game they had just played.
Lady Eagles coach Bradley Stephens said that’s exactly what his girls did, thanking God for a great season.
“Everything we did, we tried to do for his honor, glory and praise,” Stephens said. “That’s what we tried to do. I think we achieved that.
“We just came up short,” he said.
Complete coverage of today’s games will be in Tuesday’s edition of the Star-News.
