After months of preparation, the Andalusia Area Humane Society will open its doors for an open house and adoption event today.

Debra Evans of the AAHS said 15 animals will be available for adoption from the Andalusia Animal Shelter.

“I believe they will already be spayed or neutered,” she said.

Adoption fees are $92, which includes spay and neuter surgery and rabies vaccination.

Members of the organization have worked diligently to fix up the building they purchased in October of 2012.

Evans said the AAHS will not serve as an animal shelter, but instead, will help treat animals until they are well enough for adoption or to end to a rescue.

Most recently, volunteers have helped nurse two neighborhood strays back to health after a bout with mange.

“They’ll be up for adoption, too,” Evans said.

Additionally, the organization maintains a program to help control animal over-population in Covington County.

It offers assistance to low income families and those adopting strays through affiliated programs.

Evans said the Andalusia City Council has granted the organization Friends of the Shelter status, which allows them to work closely with the shelter to help with spaying and neutering and adoption events such as today’s.

“We are not here to duplication the shelter’s efforts, just to enhance,” she said.

Today’s event will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at the AAHS location at 411 Pearl Street.

It will feature free food and drinks, plenty of raffle prizes, including a pet-friendly Gulf Shores weekend getaway for two, spay and neuter for a pet and meals and gifts from local merchants.

Additionally, microchipping will be available for $25.

Leashed pets are welcome, too.
