Instead of celebrating his 800th win on Saturday, LBWCC head baseball coach Steve Helms reflected back on the good memories he’s had over his 22-year career.
The Saints beat Enterprise State 8-5 in the first game of a conference doubleheader to give their coach his milestone win.
“I’m thankful I’ve had the administration from LBW and assistant coaches, and all of the former players,” Helms said. “Good memories. That’s what (the win) means.”
Helms said he’s more proud of how much the team has accomplished this year — finishing the regular season as the No. 1 seed out of the southern division and getting 34 wins while overcoming adversity due to injuries.
“I’m in a very happy state with our team,” he said.
What he’s most proud of through all the years of coaching is see his former players succeed in life, Helms said.
“(Tuesday), I was in Montgomery and got the chance to go to Patterson Field, where Tyler Dent was coaching Coosa Valley,” he said. “I got to see a guy who went through here win a state championship.
“One of my kids showed up in 1992 out of the blue and we caught up,” he said. “I’ve got good memories in what the players have become. That’s what I’m proud of the most.”
