Attorney R. Scott Whitehead, the third and most important of Harvey Tipler’s cellmates who say they plotted with him to kill Assistant State Attorney Russ Edgar, took the stand Thursday for the prosecution.

Whitehead actually worked with investigators to tape jailhouse conversations with Tipler, a former Andalusia resident.

In those talks played Thursday afternoon, Tipler was heard discussing plans to pay someone to arrange with an Atlanta hit man to stalk and kill Edgar.

Whitehead and Tipler knew one another as attorneys before their careers were derailed by criminal activity.

Tipler has been arrested three times on racketeering charges and has been disbarred from the Florida Bar.

Whitehead’s law license was suspended after several alcohol-related incidents. He has since been charged with racketeering and offered a plea to the charge. He will be sentenced May 17.

Tipler’s trial will continue today.
