Florala’s baseball team is one excited bunch of players and coaches.
The Wildcats beat Pleasant Home 2-0 and 6-3 in an area doubleheader Tuesday night to claim the Class 1A, Area 3 championship for the first time since 2006.
“Our kids are really excited,” FHS baseball coach Bubba Nall said. “Good things do happen to those who work hard. I’m really proud of our kids, our coaches, our community and school.”
With these wins, Florala will host the first round of the state playoffs, and knocked PHS out of the hunt. Red Level also clinched a spot in the post season and finished as the area runner up.
FHS now sits at 13-4 overall.
Nall said Pleasant Home’s pitchers threw a good first game.
“The second game, we started hitting a little bit,” he said. “That was the difference in the second game.”
Florala’s John Bess pitched for the win in the first game.
Nall said Stephen Ratliff pitched a no-hitter in the second game.
Gavin McCurley hit a three-run bomb to get the bats going for the Wildcats in game two.
PHS baseball coach Lamar Gibson said Florala played well in the two games and made the plays they needed to to win.
“They hit the ball well tonight,” Gibson said.
Gibson said he thought Hunter Odom pitched well in the first game, and John Newby had a great game behind the plate for the Eagles.
FHS will finish up its regular season at home against McKenzie on Monday.
Pleasant Home is at Samson on Friday.
