Two deer are responsible for setting off a chain of events in Thursday’s fatal four-car crash, and now, police are working to determine if criminal charges should be filed against the driver who hit Linda Rich Knight’s car head-on.

“It’s a sad set of circumstances,” Kevin Cook said. “What we can release is that Ms. Knight hit two deer. Her vehicle became disabled in the northbound lane of Ala. Hwy. 55 with her flashers on. The second vehicle came over the hill and hit (Knight’s) vehicle head on and then spun around and hit a third vehicle, and finally, sideswiped a fourth vehicle that was parked.”

The driver of the second vehicle was identified as 20-year-old Wyatt Sexton of McKenzie, while the driver of the third vehicle was identified as 49-year-old Ellen Marie Kelley of Andalusia.

The accident occurred at the 46.5-mile marker, two miles south of McKenzie.

Cook said there were a number of extenuating circumstances in the wreck, but couldn’t comment of whether alcohol, drugs or speed played a part in the crash.

“I can say that the AST Traffic Homicide Division is looking into the accident,” he said. “The specifics of the crash remain under investigation, and it’s too early to tell (if charges will be filed). Like in any traffic homicide case, blood and urine (from Sexton) was drawn and sent to the lab. It will take time before those results are back.”

Knight, who would have turned 48 on Friday, was on her way to work as a customer service manager at the Andalusia Wal-Mart, when the accident occurred.

Wal-Mart store personnel said Monday Knight was a “valued associate who will very much be missed.”

Knight will be laid to rest today at 11 a.m., with funeral services being held at the Second Baptist Church in Georgiana.
