The citizens of Andalusia should be very pleased with the way our mayor, Earl Johnson, promotes our city. Recently, I had the opportunity to see him in action in Birmingham, Ala. My wife, Louise, and I attended a birthday luncheon celebration for Mr. Edgar Weldon, who was a fraternity brother of mine at the University of Alabama. Earl and his wife, Sylvia, also attended the luncheon, as did many others, including Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., chancellor of Troy University, Mrs. Doreen Poitevint, board for regents for the University of Georgia, and retired professional basketball player Buck Johnson, to name a few.

During casual conversations, Earl proudly and continuously promoted Andalusia. He told everyone that our hometown had been named the 49th best small city in the United States, and that the city had received a grant of $8.6 million to improve South Three-Notch Street. To further impress the guests and bring attention to our town, Earl read a proclamation from Andalusia to Mr. Weldon that proclaimed an Edgar Weldon Day. The proclamation added a fun element to the luncheon, and it surely placed the city of Andalusia in the minds of the people who heard Earl speak.

I have not always been an Earl Johnson supporter, but I do know when I see someone doing a good job. Earl is doing a good job promoting Andalusia. Every citizen should thank him for the work he does to promote our hometown.
