Straughn getting the chance to cut its home basketball net down after a big win is priceless.

Ninth-ranked SHS went on a 27-0 run and blanked T.R. Miller 48-19 in the Class 3A South Sub Regional on Thursday night.

When the clock ticked down to zero, SHS coach Scott Kinsaul said it felt “great” to get the win.

“It’s great, but we don’t feel like it’s over,” Kinsaul said. “This win means we get to play next Thursday. We just have more work to do.”

With this victory, Straughn (30-2) will play in the Class 3A South Regional Tournament next week in Dothan. The Lady Tigers’ last appearance at the tournament was during the 1995-96 season.

This win also signifies Kinsaul’s 300th career victory.

The SHS coach said he couldn’t have reached this milestone without his family and previous players.

“I’ve had a lot of great teams with great players,” he said. “It’s not about me. It’s about the relationships with the players I’ve had, and watching them grow. That means more than any of the 300 wins that I’ve accomplished.”

Kinsaul added that he couldn’t have accomplished one win without his wife, Lori.

“She’s been a big supporter of me and I couldn’t have done it without her,” he said. “My mom and dad (Doyle and Jackie) have supported me all this time as well, and I appreciate them.”

SHS will face Abbeville at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Dothan Civic Center for the semifinals of the regional tournament.

Getting off to a hairy start in the first period, the Lady Tigers found themselves down 5-4 at the 4:18 mark.

Katelyn Kinsaul’s 3-pointer with 2:29 left started a Straughn 24-0 run to close out the first half as her team led 28-5 at the break.

Brittany Driver got two nice layups off of good passes from Katelyn and Jacie Williamson to end the first period. SHS led 12-5.

Kinsaul said the girls were a little nervous at the start.

“Once we settled down and played like we’ve been playing all year, we were fine,” he said.

Driver started the second period with a turn-around layup, and Williamson followed with a putback to put SHS ahead 16-5.

Driver later found Janelle Nurse on a long pass for a 3-pointer and the Lady Tigers found themselves leading 22-5.

Katelyn, who led SHS with 11 points, ended the long run how it started on a 3-pointer with about seven seconds left in the first half.

Williamson started the second half with a 3-pointer to increase her team’s lead by 26 points at 31-5.

TRM stopped its bleeding a bit with a 3-pointer by Lateysia Montgomery at the 7:03 mark in the third period.

Emily Wood’s trey and Mariah Bonham’s 3-pointer gave SHS a healthy 41-10 lead going into the fourth period.

TRM outscored Straughn 9-8 in the fourth period, and that was OK by Kinsaul.

“I just slowed it down,” he said about the final eight minutes. “We didn’t need to score.”

SHS took a timeout with 6:25 left in the game and Kinsaul said he took the break to remind his girls of the big lead.

“We took some threes that we didn’t need to,” he said. “All I was caring about was watching that clock go to zero.”

Driver scored 10 points and Williamson chipped in nine points to pace SHS. Nurse scored six points off the bench.

Montgomery led TRM with 10 points.

At the end of the game, players for SHS took turns cutting the net down.

Hurt guard Audrey Driver (ACL) cut the last loop with the help of her teammates.

Kinsaul said the net-cutting ceremony was a reward for the girls.

“It’s to symbolize what we’ve done all year,” he said. “I’m proud of our fans coming out tonight and supporting us. The pep band was awesome. We just appreciate them so much coming out.”
