Brice Scott doesn’t know how he plays so well on the basketball court.

The Straughn sophomore guard said he works hard and lets the game come to him, almost allowing the sport to flow around him.

“That’s really it,” Scott said.

Scott’s performance over the last week has earned him The Star-News’ Player of the Week honors.

He scored 24 points and tallied five steals against Pleasant Home on Monday; scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds and six assists against Florala on Friday; and racked up 20 points, four assists and four steals against Red Level last week.

For the season, Scott averages 13.4 points, four assists and about 3.4 steals per game.

SHS coach Rusty Andrews said Scott has brought a great amount of leadership to the team this year.

“As 10th grader now, he’s more or less been here two years so it’s almost like a junior playing,” Andrews said. “He’s done everything we’ve asked of him to do, including more.”

Andrews said he’s fortunate to have Scott under his wing because he’s been “consistent.”

“He’s been consistent all year,” he said. “That’s the good thing about him (Scott). We’ve been, I don’t want to say lucky — we’ve been very consistent. We’ve always had consistent scoring out of three people.

“So, you can’t just try to stop one,” he said. “We’re as balanced a group as I have ever had as far as coaching. They play well together. They enjoy being out here.”

So does Scott.

Scott started playing the sport he loves at 4 years old in Straughn’s youth basketball league.

“It’s great,” Scott said about playing at Straughn. “My teammates, we bond together. Coach (Andrews) works us hard. I wouldn’t rather be anywhere else.”

Later this week, Straughn will host the Class 3A, Area 2 tournament.

Scott said the Tigers will continue to do what they’ve always done this year.

“We’re going to work hard every night and hopefully get a win,” he said.
